2021 Volnay Fremiets 1. Cru Marquis d'Angerville

The 2021 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has a very pure and open bouquet, perfumed red cherry and wild strawberry fruit laced with wilted rose petals. Not powerful yet nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle but insistent grip, more structure than the Clos des Angles with a touch of white pepper towards the finish. Fine persistence. This is a Volnay to cherish over the next 15-20 years.

(from a 1.57 ha parcel). A slightly riper nose reflects cool and airy aromas of spicier red cherry, plum and an all but invisible touch of oak. There is a bit more volume if not quite the same delicacy to the medium-bodied flavors that flash evident minerality on the firm, youthfully austere and dusty bitter pit fruit-inflected finale. As is usually the case, this is more structured than the Clos des Angles (note that the suggested initial drinking window here is for 750 ml whereas the Clos des Angles is in magnum format) though it could be approached after 5 to 7 years.

Fine bright lighter purple. One of the nuttier noses. Red fruit begins to grow behind, but firmer structure at the back, again with this walnut note. Quite long.
