2016 Pinot Noir Walker Bay Newton Johnson

Newton Johnson's Walker Bay Pinot Noir is a perfect introduction to South African cold-climate Pinot Noir. It is a blend of wines from the family's younger vines (which will later be included in the single vineyard wines) which at this stage give a youthful fresh fruit, not without character but with less complexity than the grapes from the older vines. The grapes are harvested by hand, fermented with wild yeast and the wine is aged for 12 months in specially made, slightly toasted oak barrels from Burgundy (33% new). The wine has a lovely bright red colour and a floral aroma. It is an elegant Pinot with feminine structure and lots of fresh red fruit such as cherries and raspberries, as well as hints of spice and vanilla. A deliciously cool and youthful Pinot Noir with a lovely soft aftertaste.
